TEACHING INTERESTS
I believe that an excellent teacher is one who can inspire his students in learning and acquiring knowledge for not only solving routine problems but also solving other non-routine problems and even problems in real life situations. This is especially critical in making university education effective, relevant and responsive to the knowledge-based economy, which Singapore is rapidly transforming into.
I strongly believe that the ability in explaining concept in a precise and concise way for easy understanding by the students is a prerequisite for an excellent mathematics teacher. Mathematical concepts and ideas are easier to grasp and understand if they are presented systematically. I emphasize on genuine understanding of mathematical concepts than on providing solutions to the problems in my teaching. With clear understanding of the mathematics concepts, the students would have the ability to apply the knowledge that they have acquired not only to standard classroom problems but also to novel types of problem. To have a clear understanding, the design of lecture notes and tutorials are very important. In my lecture notes, there are a lot of "Pause and Think sessions". These "Pause and Think sessions" are designed to help the students to think and enhance their understanding of the subject taught in every lecture. One or two more difficult problems are included in each tutorial to further train their problem solving skills. Short quizzes are also given to the students frequently during lectures or as homework to challenge their creative thinking as well as to increase their interest in the subject. Finally, I also compiled a revision problem set with solutions to help the students to revise for the final examination.
