He was also deeply involved in surgical training over the years and till 2007 was the Deputy chair of the surgical training committee for the South east of Scotland and tutor and convener for the Basic Surgical skills course of the RCSEd. He has also been an examiner for the FRCS, AFRCS and MRCS exams and is also on the panel of examiners for the exit FRCS examination (intercollegiate).
