BIO
I am a unique entity in Business School. Trained in pure Mathematics, I turned out to spend most of my time on computer programming, but ended up teaching in Business School. To me, Math is my gift, teaching is my rice bowl, and programming is my life. I belong to the "lucky" generation who witnessed the evolution of computer programming.
From the antediluvian procedural languages like Pascal, Fortran and C, to object-oriented languages like C++, C# and Java, to modern Python and R, I have used all of them in depth. My biggest achievement is the development of a series of backbone systems supporting the daily operations of SMRT, ranging from trainload estimation -> crew scheduling -> train arrival forecasting -> train captain management. The experience in developing such enterprise management systems provides me with a unique vision of nurturing business students when teaching them business analytics and R programming.
My job in NUS Business School is driven by two beliefs. First, business education needs to be changed. With the rapid development in the business world, business education including both BBA and MBA programmess, has to be adapted to a more technology and data-oriented culture. While heading the development of Business Analytics Specialisation, I am trying to encourage more colleagues to embrace data in their modules so as to build a holistic data environment throughout our students' study in the school. Personally, I have developed several modules like "Decision Analytics Using Spreadsheets".
