BIO

I teach "CHC5331 Chinese Ceramics from Tang to Qing" and "CHC5338 Chinese Maritime Exploration and Cultural Exchange" in the Department of Chinese Studies, National University of Singapore. I have taught the courses of "Chinese Heritage: History and Literature" in the Department of Chinese Studies, NUS, in 2017, and "Chinese Tradition and Society" in the Chinese Division, Nanyang Technological University, in 2013.

Born and raised in Singapore, I received my B.A. and M.A. degrees in Chinese Studies from NUS and obtained the PhD degree in ceramic archaeology from the School of Archaeology and Museology, Peking University, in 2012. I am professionally trained to excavate and process large quantity of ceramic assemblage from kiln site, shipwreck and ruin of ancient city. My PhD. dissertation has studied the trade routes, ship types, port management of ancient China and ceramics cargo salvaged from the shipwrecks in Southeast Asia waters.

In the last few years, I have been involved in pre-modern Singapore history research and participated in two major archaeological projects in ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. I analysed the 2015 Empress Place archaeological excavation's ceramic assemblage and processed the ceramic assemblage of a late imperial Chinese shipwreck found in Singapore waters.

Prior to the Singapore research, I was involved in Aceh Geohazard Projects conducted by Earth Observatory of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University. As a Research Fellow in EOS, I analysed the ceramic assemblage collected in archaeological surveys from 44 villages, 2016 - 2018. This project has already resulted in a number of important publications, including papers in the Archaeological Research in Asia and Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
