TEACHING INTERESTS
I’ve always been drawn to stories that don’t get enough attention—those that come from the margins or places where people’s voices are often overlooked. I love digging into untold stories, whether it’s a community’s struggles, forgotten histories, or moments that challenge what we think we know.
My background as a historian shapes my approach—whether I’m deep diving into archives or exploring oral histories. I adopt a journalistic sensibility to my work through on-ground research and interviews. My training as a documentary filmmaker enables me to bring cinematic storytelling and depth to every project, always seeking to give voice to the stories that deserve to be heard.
In my module, I teach documentary filmmaking. Students will learn and discuss the theory and practice of documentary making, basic filmmaking techniques, develop their storytelling craft, and discover the power of narratives. We will explore some key questions - how real is reality in documentary? Is documentary purely an act of documenting, or deliberate and intentional selecting? How do the stories we choose to tell reflect who we are as filmmakers, and as individuals? What are the choices and consequences that come with the way we craft narratives?
By the end of the module, students will successfully create their own short documentary film inspired by an issue, concern, or question that they are interested in exploring. This course is targeted at students with a broad diversity of background and disciplines.
