I am an internationally respected educator, academic, implementation scientist and thought leader in the field of integrated care, population health and primary health care policy and management. I have worked for the past 30 years in both the University and NGO Sector to advocate for and to support the design and delivery of evidence-informed approaches that improve the quality of health and social care systems. Through research, education, policy advice and program implementation I have provided support to the adoption of new models of care across more than 25 countries worldwide. In January 2016, I received the Avedis Donabedian International Award for contribution to Healthcare Excellence.

Since August 2025, I have been working as a Professor of Health Policy at the Centre for Research in Health System Performance (CRiHSP), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. CRiHSP aims to be a world leading centre of excellence in research, dissemination and education on the optimisation of health system performance for population health.

From July 2019 to April 2025, I was the inaugural Director of the Central Coast Research Institute (CCRI) based within the Health and Wellbeing Precinct on the Gosford Hospital campus. Developed in partnership between the University of Newcastle and Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD), I also worked in seconded roles as CCLHD's Director of Research at CCLHD and Program Manager for the All-Inclusive Care for Older People's program on the Central Coast working to the Central Coast Health Alliance.

In 2011, Nick co-founded the International Foundation for Integrated Care (IFIC), a not-for-profit foundation based in the Netherlands dedicated to improving the science, knowledge and adoption of integrate care in policy and practice across the World (www.integratedcarefoundation.org). Nick became its first CEO in 2013 and was Editor-in-Chief of its scientific periodical, the International Journal of Integrated Care (www.ijic.org), from 2011-2025. Nick continues to work as a journal editor and Senior Associate with IFIC, including support to its collaborative centres in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Between 2007 and 2013, Nick was Senior Fellow at The King’s Fund in London leading its programs on primary health care policy and management, integrated care and telehealth & telecare. Nick led the Independent Inquiry into the Quality of Care in English General Practice in 2009-2011.
