BIO
I'm a Provost's Chair Professor in the Dept. of English, Linguistics, and Theatre Studies. My main research interests are in language policy, new varieties of English and general issues in sociolinguistics, pragmatics and applied linguistics. I've recently begun working with two theatre colleagues, Nora Samosir and Nidya Shanthini Manokara, both from the University of the Arts, Singapore. Our collaborations have focused on the metatheatrical implications of the representation of females in staged performances. My latest book, with Nora Samosir, is Sociolinguistics of the Korean Wave: Hallyu and Soft Power (Routledge, forthcoming). My current project looks into the ideological implications of automation in communication.
