Dr

Anand Kumar Sharma

Assistant Professor

Office of Research

BIO

During his doctoral research (2012-2019) at the CSIR–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, Anand investigated the conformational remodelling and protein–protein interactions of calcium sensor proteins, establishing a strong foundation in mechanistic biochemistry. In 2019, he joined ETH Zurich as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Christian Wolfrum. There, he studied multiple aspects of metabolic regulation, with a particular focus on the physiology of futile lipid cycling and its role in non-shivering thermogenesis and systemic metabolic homeostasis. His work contributed to emerging concepts about how energetically “inefficient” metabolic pathways can support physiological adaptation.

On January 1, 2026, Anand joined Imperial College London as an Assistant Professor of Cell Biology and later relocated to Duke-NUS Medical School. His research program seeks to understand why individuals differ in their ability to maintain metabolic balance under physiological and environmental stress. His laboratory investigates how futile metabolic cycles and somatic variation contribute to metabolic flexibility and adaptive homeostasis. Using mechanistic biochemistry, genetic perturbation, and single-cell multi-omics approaches, his group studies how metabolic circuits are reprogrammed in tissues to uncover principles underlying metabolic resilience and disease heterogeneity. Besides publishing primary research and high impact reviews, Anand also serves as an Associate Editor at BioProtocol and reviews manuscripts for journals including Cell Metabolism, Nature Metabolism, Diabetologia, Molecular Metabolism, and Nature Communications.
