BIO

I am a socio-legal scholar who researches and writes on crime, criminal justice, and human rights. My specific topics of interest include sexuality and race.  As a sociologist by training, my work often engages the fields of sociology of emotions and social theory.  And as a lawyer who has worked for the courts, I am fascinated with judicial procedures, legislative history, and especially how legal structures impact the lives of marginal communities.

I have published in the Columbia Human Rights Law ReviewJournal of Human RightsCurrent Sociology, and the Philippine Sociological Review.  I serve as an editor for Sociology Compass, Philippine Sociological Review, Women's Studies International Forum and the Asian Journal of Social Science.  I am also on the advisory board of the Bristol University Press Sociology of Diversity Series.

I received the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Excellence Award in 2019, 2020, and 2021. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (U.K.).

I held a joint appointment with NUS College from 2022-2025 and am the Convenor of the Global Studies Programme (2023-2028).
