TEACHING INTERESTS
I believe that the knowledge that I wish to transfer to the students
should be relevant and meaningful for them in today's society. The
amount of information available is increasing exponentially and being
able to assess what is useful information becomes a critical skill to
develop for today's students. Effective knowledge transfer will depend
on using the right tools to deliver lessons and using the proper
approach to expose students to the issues at hand and the solutions that
are available. I believe there is a need to engage the students in
order to educate. A sort of social contract has to be drawn out between
the teacher and the student in order to have a common understanding from
the beginning so as to achieve a common outcome.
Objectives:
1) To instill in students a certain set of skills or knowledge useful in their lives.
2) To allow students to appreciate the issues addressed in the course and be able to arrive at an informed decision or opinion.
3) To inculcate critical thinking abilities and a level of independent thinking.
4) To improve the scientific literacy of the population
Strategies:
1) Deliver modules that are engaging and challenging to the students.
2) Provide opportunities for students to be active learners and not just a passive consumers of facts.
Methodologies:
1) Implement appropriate ways to explore and examine topics in modules. This can be achieved via facilitating in-class discussions, or implementing situational assignments, project work, lab practicals, or fieldtrips.
2) Explore and implement tools that can aid in learning. Keep up to date on multimedia learning tools and experiment with suitable tools that can enhance the learning experience.
