BIO
I study how the behavior and incentives of economic actors, such as households, workers, and firms, interact with scarce environmental resources, such as climate, urban air, land use, food, and water.
My ongoing projects relate to the public’s awareness of the climate, biodiversity, and plastic crises, personal environmental accountability, and individual action. I am testing whether non-judgmental and private disclosure of emissions to individuals, in their roles as consumers and workers, can shape environmental preferences and widen citizen support for climate investments.
In my view, the gap in public understanding and engagement is the mother of all gaps when it comes to solving the global environmental crisis, for example, through behaviors that enable the implementation of technological solutions and policies that protect our planet's remaining wildlife and primary vegetation. I am interested in education campaigns across different consumption domains such as protein foods, private car travel, public transport, air travel, residential utilities, and land use & forestry change.
As an environmental economist and behavioral social scientist, I collaborate across disciplines, including atmospheric sciences, food science & technology, environmental health, consumer psychology, marketing, transport engineering, and strategic communication. My work focuses on Asia’s under-studied and globally critical environment and society. I increasingly try to leave the ivory tower and do environmental advocacy work with partners in industry, civil society, and government.
At NUS, I serve on the University Sustainability and Climate Action Council since 2022, among other university-wide commitments including my affiliation with the Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk and the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein. At the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, I hold a Dean's Chair award (2022-2028) and serve on a Faculty Tenure and Promotion Committee. In the Department of Economics, I was the Deputy Head for Research between 2021 and 2024.
Beyond NUS, I am a Co-editor at the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists and a Member of the Editorial Council at the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.
