RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research examines the changing landscape of Southeast Asian arts and cultural heritage, by combining computational methods with two decades of regional fieldwork. I am especially interested in the performing arts, language, and historical periodicals. I want to understand these cultural forms evolve – from changes in their formal characteristics to shifts in how they are produced, experienced, and discussed. To understand these changes, I combine computational approaches (NLP, computer vision, and network analysis) with methods that bring attention to cultural specificity (such as history and ethnography). I believe that mixed-methods allow us to identify both fine-grained details and broad patterns across time and space. A significant part of my work involves creating novel datasets or reassembling sparse evidence from historical archives, social media, newspapers, and other records of cultural production. Within the confines imposed by copyright and privacy, I try to share open data, detailed logbooks of data transformations and research software code. Beyond academic publication, I develop public-facing projects through museum installations and digital platforms to make my research accessible to wider audiences.
