TEACHING INTERESTS
Over the years of my university teaching, I have continuously adapted my teaching philosophy to meet the demands of our ever-changing world. My current teaching philosophy reflects my personal beliefs regarding teaching and learning in a university setting. I see my mission as a university educator as threefold:
- To constantly update my professional knowledge and guide students in their learning.
- To ignite students' enthusiasm for learning.
- To provide students with a strong foundation for lifelong learning, without spoon-feeding.
We are surrounded by an astounding amount of information, readily available every day. Rapid advancements in knowledge require every professional to be an active learner and contributor to their field of study. My teaching responsibilities have evolved over the years, and this compels me to continually update my professional knowledge through learning and research. This enables me to fulfil my role more effectively as a guide and mentor in students' learning journeys. For university students, guiding them to enjoy learning and discover its value is crucial for effective education, especially in a world that changes so rapidly. Traditional teaching, often focused on passive listening and absorbing information, limits the effectiveness of learning. My teaching approach seeks to transform this by creating a learning environment where students are motivated and guided to explore knowledge according to their own interests.
An effective learning environment should challenge students' thinking and spark their interest in learning. I see my role in a learner-centred classroom as that of a designer of learning opportunities. To create a stimulating and rigorous learning experience, I help students understand how their learning is relevant to their lives and how it can enhance their understanding of their social environment. This empowers them to make wiser decisions regarding their future.
I am a strong advocate for encouraging students to build a solid foundation for lifelong learning. This foundation includes not only knowledge but also the ability to communicate effectively. I assist students in designing personalised learning strategies to strengthen their knowledge base. Extensive writing and presentations are key components of the learning process.
Ultimately, a good teacher must be committed to continuous improvement and open to new challenges at all times.
I adopt four key strategies in my teaching:
- Keeping materials up to date with value-added components.
- Emphasising the relevance of knowledge to daily life.
- Teaching knowledge while facilitating understanding.
- Nurturing good learning habits and fostering rigorous research attitudes.
The issues in the real estate discipline are rooted in the real world. As real estate markets evolve, so do the concerns, requiring new theories and methodologies to address them. Incorporating research components into my teaching and keeping the content current are, therefore, essential. Often, I cannot find ready-made teaching materials that meet students' needs. This requires me to continually update my knowledge and research, so that I can pass on new information to students and integrate my research findings into my teaching.
Effective learning results in a deep and comprehensive understanding of knowledge, which occurs when students can internalise and apply it to solve real-world problems in creative and meaningful ways. In all my modules, I encourage students to link course material to real-life examples and to apply abstract theories to their everyday experiences. This approach empowers students to articulate ideas and process concepts in ways that are meaningful to them. It is also an effective method for developing their ability to engage in scientific inquiry.
I emphasise the relevance of the real estate discipline by discussing contemporary housing and real estate issues as seen in the news, encouraging students to share their knowledge of the subject, and sharing how I have applied that knowledge to real-world problems. This process allows students to contribute to the course content, ensuring that the issues we address are relevant to them.
I am a proponent of active learning and seek out opportunities to encourage students to engage actively with the course material. Students in my class often come with varying levels of knowledge, and it is essential to foster an environment where they feel comfortable engaging with the material.
An effective learning environment should help students retain and comprehend knowledge efficiently. However, we expect university graduates to possess not only knowledge but also strong intellectual capabilities and ideas. Therefore, nurturing good learning habits and rigorous research attitudes at all levels is vital, as these form the foundation of lifelong learning. Students are best served when they know how to rigorously pursue knowledge.
I am constantly striving to apply these strategies in my classes. I have also found that each class presents new challenges and opportunities for me to improve my teaching. As the real estate discipline continues to grow and evolve, I must also continue to learn in order to meet the challenge of passing that knowledge on to my students. Ultimately, I hope to instil good learning habits and rigorous research attitudes in my students, laying a solid foundation for their lifelong learning.
